WhatsApp has officially started rolling out username reservations ahead of a major app update expected later this year. The new feature marks one of the platform’s biggest privacy-focused upgrades, allowing users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, users can reserve an optional username by updating to the latest version of the app and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. The feature is being introduced gradually, and users will receive an in-app notification once it becomes available in their region.
Unlike other social media platforms, WhatsApp will not create a searchable username directory. Users can only be contacted if someone already knows their exact username, reducing the chances of spam and unwanted messages. To further strengthen privacy, WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key, giving users greater control over who can initiate conversations.
With more than three billion users worldwide, WhatsApp has opened username reservations early to help users secure their preferred handles before the global rollout. If a desired username is unavailable, the app will suggest unique alternatives through a built-in username generator.
The feature also benefits creators, businesses, and organizations by allowing eligible users to reserve the same usernames they already use on Instagram or Facebook, ensuring consistent branding across Meta’s platforms.
WhatsApp emphasized that usernames are entirely optional. Users who prefer sharing their phone numbers can continue using the messaging service as usual. The phased rollout is already underway and will expand to more regions over the coming months.
