Former Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has praised India for providing substantial assistance to the Maldives, questioning the limited support received from other countries.

In an interview with a Maldivian broadcaster, Shahid stressed that the island nation’s foreign policy must recognise its geographical neighbours and historical ties. He criticised President Mohamed Muizzu’s government, alleging that its early approach created tensions with international partners and weakened the country’s global credibility.

Shahid also questioned the outcomes of the government’s foreign visits and investment forums, claiming they had failed to deliver significant results.

Relations between India and the Maldives deteriorated after the Muizzu government took office, following controversial remarks by Maldivian officials about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, diplomatic ties have improved since then, with both leaders exchanging visits.

Shahid’s comments highlight the importance of stable diplomatic relations and India’s continuing role in supporting its neighbouring island nation.
