Vehicles travelling in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy were involved in a collision on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district on Monday. Gandhi’s vehicle was unaffected, as the crash involved cars following behind him.

The incident occurred near kilometre 89.5 of the expressway, under Haliyapur police station limits. Details about the cause of the collision, possible injuries or damage to the vehicles were not immediately available.

Gandhi was on his way from Lucknow to Sultanpur to attend proceedings in a 2018 criminal defamation case. A special MP/MLA court was scheduled to deliver its verdict in the matter on October 26.

The case originated from a complaint filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra on August 4, 2018, over Gandhi’s alleged remarks about then-BJP president Amit Shah during a campaign rally in Bengaluru ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections.

Gandhi surrendered before the court and secured bail in February 2024. His statement was recorded later that year, while the court also heard the complainant and other witnesses. Final arguments concluded on October 12, 2026.

Authorities had arranged security at the court premises ahead of Gandhi’s expected arrival.
