South Africa showed tremendous fighting spirit to earn a 1-1 draw against Czechia in a tense Group A encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Atlanta on Thursday. The result handed Bafana Bafana their first point of the tournament and kept their qualification hopes alive.
The Czech side wasted little time making an impact. Just over five minutes into the contest, Michal Sadilek found the back of the net after a well-worked attacking move involving Adam Hlozek and Alexandr Sojka. The early strike became the fastest goal recorded at this World Cup so far, putting South Africa under immediate pressure.
Despite the setback, South Africa gradually settled into the game and created several promising opportunities. However, Czechia’s organized defense ensured they carried their slender 1-0 lead into halftime.
Looking for a spark, South Africa coach Hugo Broos introduced young attacker Relebohile Mofokeng after the break. The substitution added energy to the attack, but Czechia’s backline, led by Ladislav Krejci, continued to frustrate South Africa’s forwards.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the closing stages when Czechia conceded a penalty after Pavel Sulc handled the ball inside the area. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena stepped up confidently in the 83rd minute and calmly converted the spot-kick, beating goalkeeper Matej Kovar to level the score.
The draw leaves both South Africa and Czechia with one point from two matches. Meanwhile, Mexico and South Korea sit at the top of Group A with three points each, with Mexico leading on goal difference.
After the match, coach Hugo Broos praised his players’ determination and attacking intent. While disappointed not to secure all three points, he expressed confidence that South Africa can challenge South Korea in their next crucial group-stage fixture if they maintain the same level of performance and commitment.
