A special POCSO court in Mumbai has granted temporary bail to an 18-year-old accused in a rape case, allowing him to appear for the NEET-UG re-test scheduled on June 21.
The accused, currently lodged in Taloja Central Prison, was released on four days’ temporary bail from June 18 to June 21. The court directed him to surrender before authorities by the afternoon of June 22.
The defense argued that the student should be given an opportunity to continue his education and prepare for a career in medicine. It was also stated that appearing for the examination under police escort could affect his concentration and performance.
The prosecution opposed the request, citing the seriousness of the allegations. However, the court noted that adequate safeguards could address those concerns.
While granting relief, the judge imposed strict conditions. The accused must not contact the survivor, influence witnesses, tamper with evidence, or make any threats. He has also been asked to submit proof that he appeared for the examination when he returns to custody.
Notably, the survivor did not object to the temporary bail, provided that neither she nor her family faced any harassment or intimidation.
The court emphasized that the temporary bail was granted solely to enable the accused to take the NEET re-test and should not affect the ongoing legal proceedings. The case continues to remain under judicial consideration.
