The political standoff in Parliament continued on Tuesday, August 11, with rival protests taking place outside the Makar Dwar. BJP-led NDA MPs demonstrated over the police action against students in Jharkhand, while Opposition MPs raised allegations linked to donations to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra exchanged words with BJP MPs during the protests. She said the Opposition had forced ruling-party MPs to take up the issue of student protests. BJP leaders, however, accused Rahul Gandhi of politicising student issues.

The confrontation also became heated between BJP MP Tarun Chugh and Congress MP Varsha Gaikwad. Both sides raised slogans against senior leaders before security officials intervened.

Bills Passed Amid Uproar

Inside the Lok Sabha, repeated disruptions prevented detailed debate. The House passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, which seeks to rename Kerala as Keralam. The National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was also passed by voice vote amid protests.

A key point of contention was Amit Shah’s absence from the Lok Sabha despite government business being listed in his name. Opposition parties continued demanding his participation in the discussion on the student protests.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha passed a Bill to create a National Tribunal Commission for selecting chairpersons and members of various tribunals. Opposition INDIA bloc parties later staged a walkout, alleging that Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge was not allowed to speak.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to conclude on August 13.
