Bangladesh has linked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India with Dhaka’s demand for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives.
Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shahidul Karim said Sunday that officials from both countries had been discussing Rahman’s possible bilateral visit for several weeks. However, he said the process was affected by Hasina’s public interaction with the media in New Delhi on August 5.
Karim said Bangladesh believes a “propitious environment” must be created before the visit can take place. Dhaka has asked India to respond quickly to its extradition requests, including the demand for Hasina’s return.
Bangladesh has also sought the handover of those accused in the killing of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi, citing the bilateral extradition treaty between the two countries.
Karim reiterated that Dhaka would follow its “Bangladesh First” policy while maintaining relations with neighbouring countries. He stressed sovereign equality, national dignity, non-interference and mutual benefit as key principles.
Bangladesh is now awaiting India’s response to its requests as discussions over Rahman’s proposed visit continue.
