At least six people died after a powerful explosion and fire at an illegal firecracker factory in Ahmedabad’s Ramol area on Saturday. The blast happened around 3:30 pm and was heard several kilometres away.
Officials said 14 people were inside the factory when the explosion occurred. Several others suffered serious burn injuries and were admitted to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and LG Hospital. Doctors said some victims, including children, remain in critical condition.
Police identified the factory operator as Mehul Dodiya. Authorities said the factory was operating despite its licence being cancelled. A case will be registered under the Explosives Act and other relevant sections. Forensic experts have started investigating the exact cause of the blast.
The Rapid Action Force, local police, and Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services quickly reached the site. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after a major rescue operation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy. He announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of each deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also announced ₹4 lakh compensation for each victim’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured.
