Mumbai witnessed severe monsoon-related disruptions as intense rainfall flooded roads, uprooted trees, and caused structural damage across the city. Several areas recorded more than 300 mm of rain within 24 hours, placing the downpour in the “extremely heavy rainfall” category as defined by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
South Mumbai experienced its wettest June day in over a decade, while widespread waterlogging affected daily life in multiple neighbourhoods. A retaining wall collapsed in Vikhroli West, highlighting concerns about infrastructure safety during the rainy season.
The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai and nearby districts, warning of thunderstorms, strong winds, and intense rainfall before later downgrading it to an orange alert. Flooding forced the closure of the Andheri subway, and traffic congestion was reported on several major roads.
Despite the challenging weather, suburban railway services and BEST buses continued to operate, helping commuters navigate the city. The southwest monsoon officially reached Mumbai on Tuesday, arriving later than its usual June 10 onset date and bringing much-needed relief from summer heat along with significant challenges for residents.
