The Hirakud Dam authorities in Odisha have reopened four sluice gates to release excess water following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river. The decision was taken after a steady rise in the reservoir’s water level due to continuous inflow from upstream regions.

According to officials, a total of four gates are currently open, including three on the left side and one on the right side of the dam. The move is aimed at regulating the water level and ensuring the safety of the reservoir.

Dam authorities said they are closely monitoring the inflow and water level round the clock. Further decisions on opening or closing additional gates will depend on the rainfall and inflow situation in the coming days.

Residents living in downstream areas along the Mahanadi river have been alerted to remain cautious. Local administrations have also been advised to monitor the situation and take necessary precautions to ensure public safety as water is released from the dam.
