A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking urgent medical intervention for activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar since June 28.
The public interest litigation, filed by activist and lawyer Rakesh Kumar Saini, requests the court to direct the Centre and the Delhi government to shift Wangchuk to a hospital and provide necessary medical treatment. The plea also asks for force-feeding if doctors consider it essential to save his life.
According to the petition, Wangchuk has lost around 8.5 kg during the protest, and his blood pressure has reportedly dropped to 109/70. The petitioner argues that his health is worsening and warns that delaying treatment could put his life at serious risk.
Wangchuk is protesting under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The group is demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG paper leak issue. It is also seeking education reforms and compensation for families of students who allegedly died by suicide following examination paper leak controversies.
Supporters say Wangchuk has become physically weak and struggles to walk because of dizziness. Despite repeated appeals, he has continued his fast. In a recent video message, he said he is an ordinary citizen carrying out his responsibility and urged people to support the cause peacefully.
The Delhi High Court is expected to consider the petition in the coming days. Meanwhile, the CJP has announced a protest march to Parliament on July 20, the first day of the Monsoon Session.
