Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has joined the party’s rebel camp, marking another significant development in the ongoing internal conflict within the TMC.
Mitra, a senior leader and one of the party’s longest-serving members, appeared alongside rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee before announcing that he would step down from all organisational responsibilities under the Mamata Banerjee-led faction. However, he clarified that he would continue to serve as a Trinamool Congress MLA.
Speaking to the media, Mitra said he was resigning from all national and state committees linked to the current party leadership. He also announced his resignation as chief whip. At the same time, he insisted that he had not left the party.
“I have only changed my room, not my house. I am still in the Trinamool Congress,” Mitra said, stressing that his loyalty to the party remains unchanged despite joining the rebel group.
His move is seen as another setback for the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, which has faced growing internal dissent in recent months. The rebel camp, led by Ritabrata Banerjee, claims it represents the “real” Trinamool Congress and has announced a parallel organisational structure. It has also claimed control over the party headquarters, a claim strongly rejected by the official leadership.
Mitra’s decision is likely to intensify the political battle within the Trinamool Congress as both factions continue to compete for support from party leaders and workers across West Bengal.
