At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has become the biggest talking point in Indian cricket. The young batter from Bihar has not only earned a place in India’s T20 squad but has also captured the imagination of millions of fans.
His selection surprised a few who followed his IPL journey. India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar summed it up perfectly when he said, “I think he has just picked himself, really.” Agarkar also described Vaibhav as an explosive player and a game-changer, adding that everyone who watched him had high hopes for his future.
Throughout the 2026 IPL season, Vaibhav attracted attention wherever he played. Fans packed stadiums to watch him bat. In Lucknow, supporters from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh proudly claimed him as one of their own. Many came not for a team but for a teenager who seemed fearless against some of the world’s best bowlers.
The excitement reached another level during the Rajasthan Royals’ Eliminator match in New Chandigarh. The crowd included children, parents, and grandparents. Fans carried handmade banners and wore jerseys with Vaibhav’s name. One Haryana-based fan who attended the match with his family explained the emotional connection many people felt.
“It’s like personal success,” he said.
His words reflected the journey behind Vaibhav’s rise. His father reportedly sold land to support his cricket dream, while his mother woke up before dawn to prepare meals before long trips to training sessions. For many Indian families, that story felt familiar.
Vaibhav’s performances matched the growing hype. He scored 776 runs during the IPL season and hit 72 sixes, breaking long-standing records. His aggressive batting impressed players across the cricketing world.
Australian captain Pat Cummins, who was hit for a six by Vaibhav on the first ball he bowled to him, called the teenager “my new favourite player” and praised his ability to strike the ball with immense power.
The youngster’s humility has also earned admiration. Before a playoff match, he walked over and touched the feet of former Indian cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Saba Karim during training. The gesture quickly went viral.
Gavaskar later revealed his advice to the teenager: “Lage raho, bete. Lage raho,” which means “Keep going, son.”
Vaibhav’s coach, Manish Ojha, compared the moment to another famous chapter in Indian cricket. He said that after Sachin Tendulkar, Vaibhav is among the youngest players to receive such an opportunity at the national level.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli summed up the mood with a simple phrase: “Ek Bihari Sab Pe Bhaari.”
As Vaibhav prepares for international tours in Ireland, England, and Japan, expectations continue to rise. Yet for many fans, his greatest achievement is already clear. He has reminded people of the pure joy of watching cricket without overthinking numbers or statistics.
For Indian cricket, this may only be the beginning of the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi story.
