The BJP could face a tougher electoral battle in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, as the latest Mood of the Nation survey points to shifting political sentiments in the state.
The August 2026 survey projects the INDIA bloc winning 41 of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 Lok Sabha seats, while the BJP-led NDA is projected to secure 38 if a general election were held today. In January, the NDA was projected to win 48 seats to the INDIA bloc’s 31. However, these figures do not directly predict the 2027 Assembly election outcome.
Political analyst Yashwant Deshmukh said the BJP’s concern may extend beyond Gen Z to Gen X, particularly over the ongoing debate surrounding UGC equity regulations.
According to Deshmukh, memories of the Mandal Commission era could be influencing sections of upper-caste voters, who have traditionally been an important BJP support base in Uttar Pradesh.
Another challenge is the controversy surrounding alleged irregularities involving Ram Mandir donations. The survey found that 47% of respondents believed the issue had negatively affected both the Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath governments.
With unemployment, reservation and local grievances shaping political discussions, Uttar Pradesh could emerge as a closely contested battleground in 2027.
