Penguin Random House India has denied reports that it withdrew from publishing Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir Belonging: A Journey of Love in India after she rejected editorial changes.
In a statement, the publisher clarified that it is not the publisher of the memoir and said claims that it decided against publishing the book because Gandhi refused proposed edits were inaccurate.
The publishing house said fact-checking manuscripts and suggesting editorial changes are a normal part of the publishing process. It also maintained that, during discussions, it remained willing and interested in publishing the book.
Belonging is being published in the US by Alfred A. Knopf, a Penguin Random House imprint. The memoir is scheduled for release on November 10, 2026, with an initial print run of 100,000 copies.
The book is expected to cover Gandhi’s childhood in post-war Italy, her marriage to Rajiv Gandhi, her years as Indira Gandhi’s daughter-in-law and her entry into politics. It will also discuss her decision in 2004 to decline the prime minister’s post.
The clarification leaves the status of the book’s India publishing rights unclear, amid reports of interest from other publishers.
