In a major leadership reshuffle, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain of India’s T20 International team, replacing World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav. The decision was reportedly finalized during a recent Apex Council meeting as the selectors shifted their focus toward building a long-term squad for future global tournaments.
The move signals the beginning of a new chapter in Indian cricket, with the management aiming to establish a stable leadership group ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Shreyas Iyer’s appointment comes on the back of impressive performances both as a batter and a leader. Over the past few seasons, he has built a strong reputation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and previously leading Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals.
His batting form has also been exceptional. In IPL 2025, Iyer scored over 600 runs at an explosive strike rate, while in the 2026 season, he continued his consistency with nearly 500 runs. These performances strengthened his claim for a leadership role despite being absent from India’s T20I setup since late 2023.
The selectors reportedly viewed Iyer as the ideal candidate to lead a younger squad into the next cycle of international tournaments. Young stars such as Tilak Varma and Ishan Kishan were also considered for leadership responsibilities, but Iyer’s extensive captaincy experience ultimately gave him the edge.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav’s removal has come as a surprise to many fans. The 35-year-old led India to a successful defence of their T20 World Cup title earlier this year and maintained a strong winning record as captain. However, concerns over his recent batting performances and long-term availability appear to have influenced the decision.
Suryakumar endured a difficult IPL 2026 season, struggling for consistency and finishing with modest numbers compared to his usual standards. His performances during the T20 World Cup were also considered below expectations by the selectors.
India’s new T20I era is expected to begin later this month with a two-match series in Ireland, followed by a challenging five-match series against England. The upcoming squad announcement is likely to provide further insight into the team’s future direction.
With Shreyas Iyer at the helm, Indian cricket enters a transition phase focused on youth, continuity, and long-term success. The selectors will hope that this bold decision helps lay the foundation for sustained dominance in the shortest format of the game.
