A devastating fire in Lucknow’s Aliganj area claimed 15 lives on Monday, raising serious questions about building safety and compliance with regulations.
According to official records, the three-storey building where the fire occurred had previously faced legal action over alleged unauthorized construction. In 2016, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) issued a demolition order after identifying possible violations. However, the owners challenged the decision, stating that the structure matched the approved building plan. The demolition order was later withdrawn.
The property has changed ownership multiple times since it was originally allotted in 1980. It was sold to new owners in 2005 and again in 2013 before being officially transferred in 2014.
Investigators are now examining whether any building norm violations or fire safety shortcomings contributed to the scale of the tragedy. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in an air-conditioning duct, while thick smoke spread rapidly through the building.
Authorities are also looking into whether the lack of adequate emergency exits trapped people on the upper floors, where an animation training centre was operating. The lower floors housed a pet shop and clinic.
The state government has ordered a detailed investigation, and officials have promised strict action if any negligence or safety violations are found.
