The Congress has announced a new election team for the 2027 Punjab Assembly polls while retaining Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the state party president. The decision is seen as an effort to maintain unity in the faction-ridden state unit.
Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has been appointed chairman of the campaign committee. Vijay Inder Singla will head the election management and coordination committee. Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa will lead the core committee, while Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh will chair the manifesto committee.
The party has also named Sukhwinder Singh Danny, Raj Kumar Verka, and Sangat Singh Gilzian as working presidents. Several senior leaders have been given roles as co-chairpersons across different committees.
The appointments follow weeks of discussions over a possible leadership change in Punjab. The Congress leadership has chosen to retain Warring and Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa while assigning important responsibilities to other senior leaders.
The party hopes the new team will strengthen its organisation before the 2027 elections. Congress is aiming to recover after poor results in recent Assembly, bypoll and municipal elections in the state.
