Kolkata, June 1, 2026: The leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, has announced a significant protest at Rani Rashmoni Avenue in the Esplanade area of Kolkata on June 2.
The protest is in response to alleged instances of violence and attacks on TMC leaders and workers throughout the state following recent elections.
This announcement comes after a series of incidents involving high-ranking TMC officials.
Notably, Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the TMC, was reportedly attacked by a group of people in Sonarpur on May 30 while visiting the family of a victim of post-election violence. According to the party, during the incident, stones, eggs, and shoes were thrown at him, causing injuries. Abhishek described the event as a “state-sponsored attack.”
The TMC has also raised concerns about other attacks on party leaders, including Lok Sabha MP Kalyan Banerjee, who claimed he was targeted near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly. Party workers across the state held demonstrations on Sunday, calling for justice and a stronger response from authorities against those involved.
Mamata Banerjee stated that the June 2 protest is intended to highlight what the party describes as a campaign of intimidation and violence aimed at opposition figures. It is expected that a large number of senior TMC leaders will participate in the sit-in.
Meanwhile, the BJP has dismissed these allegations, stating that public dissatisfaction with TMC leaders is a result of years of alleged poor governance and political violence during the party’s time in power.
Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack on Abhishek Banerjee.
As political tensions continue to rise, the June 2 protest is anticipated to be a key moment in the ongoing political developments in West Bengal.
