Bhubaneswar, June 2, 2026: In a major push towards sustainable transportation and fuel conservation, the Odisha Government has made the procurement of electric vehicles (EVs) mandatory for official use across all government departments, public sector undertakings, universities, societies, and state-supported institutions from June 1, 2026. The decision is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and promote clean mobility.

Under the new guidelines issued by the Finance Department, all newly purchased two and four-wheelers for official purposes must be electric. Departments hiring vehicles on rent for government work are also required to prefer EVs. Procurement of petrol or diesel vehicles will be permitted only under exceptional circumstances and with appropriate approval.

The government has also introduced spending caps for official EV purchases, ranging from ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh depending on the office bearer. New EV procurement will require prior concurrence from the Finance Department and can be undertaken only after the existing vehicle completes its prescribed lifespan and is scrapped.

The move aligns with Odisha’s long-term vision of accelerating EV adoption while reducing fuel expenditure and carbon emissions across government operations.
