Crans-Montana (Switzerland): A powerful explosion ripped through a crowded bar in the upscale Alpine resort town of Crans-Montana during New Year celebrations, killing multiple people and injuring several others, Swiss authorities confirmed on Thursday.

The blast occurred at the Le Constellation Bar, where more than 100 people were reportedly gathered to welcome the New Year. Police said an explosion of unknown origin triggered a fire inside the establishment at around 1:30 am. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in the early hours of the morning, while emergency operations continued throughout the day.

The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear and is under investigation. Swiss media reports suggested that fireworks or pyrotechnics used during a concert may have triggered the blast, but police officials cautioned that no conclusion has been reached. Local radio station RhoneFM cited sources claiming mishandling of pyrotechnics could be responsible, estimating that the number of casualties could be extremely high. Some reports suggested fatalities could be in the dozens, though authorities have not confirmed any figures.

Valais cantonal police said the area around the bar has been completely sealed off as rescue and forensic teams continue their work. According to local media outlet Blick, a temporary no-fly zone was imposed over Crans-Montana to facilitate emergency and investigation efforts.

Swiss broadcaster RTS reported that the explosion occurred in the basement of the bar, which has a total capacity of around 400 people. Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke rising from the site, highlighting the scale of the explosion and the ensuing fire.

Crans-Montana, located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting visitors year-round for skiing, snowboarding, golf, and other leisure activities. The resort town lies about two hours from the Swiss capital, Bern.

The incident comes months after another major fire at Switzerland’s oldest luxury hotel, the Four Seasons Hotel Des Bergues in Geneva, which left several people injured, raising renewed concerns over safety at crowded venues.
