Odisha has launched its biggest-ever security plan for the Puri Rath Yatra 2026. Nearly 12,000 police personnel, 19 IPS officers, and over 100 senior officials have been deployed for the nine-day festival starting July 16.
Around three million devotees from India and abroad are expected to visit Puri. The massive security arrangement follows last year’s stampede-like incident near the Gundicha Temple that claimed three lives.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed all departments to work together and ensure a safe and incident-free festival. Officials are also focusing on the timely completion of rituals and the smooth movement of the three chariots.
The administration has created multiple emergency evacuation corridors across the city. Around 500 CCTV cameras have been installed for round-the-clock monitoring. Eight temporary hospitals have been set up with medical teams.
To improve public facilities, authorities have installed 1,700 bio-toilets and 65 LED screens for real-time updates. Temporary mobile towers have also been added to strengthen network coverage.
The Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and central security forces will support local police during the festival. Indian Railways will operate 300 special trains to manage the large number of pilgrims.
