A 40-year-old green-painted house in Nepal’s Nuwakot district has become a symbol of survival after powerful floodwaters from the Trishuli River swept away buildings, vehicles, and belongings around it.
The house, owned by Prakash, remained largely standing despite the devastating flood. Prakash and five family members were inside when the water began rising rapidly.
The family first moved to the fourth floor, but as floodwaters continued to rise, they climbed to the highest part of the building. They remained trapped for nearly an hour before local people rescued them using a pipe and rope.
Prakash believes the house survived because of its strong construction and foundation. Built around four decades ago near the river, the building had extra layers of material placed beneath it for added strength.
Although the family survived, they suffered heavy losses. Vehicles, shop goods, and household belongings were swept away or buried in mud.
Currently staying in Kathmandu, Prakash said the family hopes to rebuild their lives despite the destruction caused by the devastating flood.
