Kannauj: The Samajwadi Party has dissolved its Kannauj district unit following poor attendance at a PDA workers’ conference, prompting questions about its local organisational strength. The decision comes after videos showing rows of empty chairs at the event circulated widely on social media.

The conference was organised by party state president Shyamlal Pal at the party office in Kannauj, the parliamentary constituency represented by Akhilesh Yadav. Although several leaders occupied the stage, the audience turnout remained low.

The incident gave the BJP an opportunity to target the Samajwadi Party’s PDA outreach, which focuses on backward classes, Dalits and minorities. BJP leaders used the visuals to question whether the party’s support base was responding to its campaign.

Following the event, the Samajwadi Party dissolved the entire district unit and removed leaders holding various organisational positions. The move signals that local leaders will be held accountable for their responsibilities, regardless of their proximity to the party leadership.

Similar action has reportedly been taken in Gorakhpur, Etah and Kasganj following separate organisational disputes and controversies.

The Kannauj episode has highlighted the challenge of converting political influence into grassroots mobilisation. For Akhilesh Yadav’s party, rebuilding the local organisation and strengthening worker participation will be important as it continues its political outreach.
