Mayurbhanj: A seven- to eight-month-old tiger cub was rescued from Khaparkhai village near Similipal Sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday night.
According to Similipal Tiger Reserve authorities, the cub first entered a cattle shed in the village under Thakurmunda Range of Karanjia Forest Division on September 24. It later moved into an unoccupied house and remained there until Friday morning.
Forest officials found that the cub needed veterinary attention. It was rescued and placed in a cage around noon on Friday. The animal will now receive treatment and remain under observation.
Once it recovers and reaches the required level of fitness, the cub will be shifted to a larger enclosure at Jamuna inside the core area of Similipal.
Officials said the cub will eventually be released into the wild after it becomes capable of hunting and surviving independently.
The rescue operation was carried out after the tiger entered a human habitation area close to the sanctuary.
