Elon Musk has renewed his push to bring Starlink satellite internet to India, highlighting its potential to improve connectivity in underserved and rural areas.
Responding to a post on X, Musk said Starlink could help communities that continue to face limited internet access, particularly in rural parts of the country.
Starlink uses satellites in low Earth orbit, allowing it to provide internet without relying heavily on traditional mobile towers or extensive ground infrastructure. This could make the service useful in remote locations where installing fibre networks or towers is difficult.
Reports cited in the provided material say Starlink has again applied to IN-SPACe for approval of its Gen 2 satellite constellation. Earlier regulatory concerns included security clearances, while spectrum allocation also remains an important issue.
The service could also prove useful during natural disasters, when conventional communication infrastructure may be damaged.
However, Starlink is not expected to replace traditional telecom networks such as Jio or Airtel. Its capacity is better suited to sparsely populated areas than densely crowded cities.
With regulatory approvals and spectrum decisions still pending, Starlink’s India launch remains subject to government clearance.
