Odisha has recorded more than 1,000 mm of cumulative monsoon rainfall this year, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Between June 1 and August 19, the state received 1,006.5 mm of rainfall against the normal 786.5 mm. This is a surplus of 220 mm, or 28% above normal.

Most districts have received excess rainfall. Fourteen districts recorded rainfall between 20% and 59% above normal. Sambalpur received 1,325.6 mm, while Mayurbhanj recorded 1,174.4 mm.

Seven districts reported large excess rainfall. Boudh had the most deviation, measuring 1,469.9 mm at 106%. Sonepur received 1,495.1 mm, while Bargarh recorded 1,438.7 mm.

Five districts received normal rainfall, including Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada and Kandhamal. However, five districts recorded deficient rainfall. Gajapati received 413.2 mm, while Nabarangpur recorded 631.4 mm.

No district has been placed in the large deficient category so far.

According to IMD officials, active monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal have contributed to widespread rainfall across Odisha, resulting in the state’s overall surplus.
