Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an emotional end to his remarkable journey with Argentina.
The 39-year-old football icon shared the decision in a heartfelt statement on Instagram on Monday, saying he would no longer wear the Argentina jersey. Messi revealed that he had written his retirement message on July 21, two days after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain.
However, the death of his father earlier this month made him even more certain about his decision.
Messi said stepping away from the national team was painful, as representing Argentina had always meant everything to him. He added that he had given his all for the country throughout his career and felt it was now time for younger players to take their opportunities.
Thanking his family, teammates, coaches, officials and supporters, Messi recalled the unforgettable memories created during his 20-year international career.
The Argentine legend said he would continue supporting his national team from outside the field, in both good and difficult times.
Ending his emotional message, Messi wrote, “Thank you, God, for making me Argentine. Let’s go, Argentina!”
