Colombo: India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando have each been fined 25 per cent of their match fees following their heated confrontation during the second Test in Colombo.
The ICC also awarded both players one demerit point after they admitted breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The rule relates to inappropriate physical contact involving players or other match officials and personnel.
The incident took place during the 17th over of India’s innings on the opening day. Fernando sent Jaiswal out after dismissing him for 45. Jaiswal turned back and exchanged words with the bowler before the two players came into physical contact. Other players intervened to prevent the situation from escalating.
Both players accepted the charges and sanctions proposed by ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft, meaning no formal hearing was required. Neither had committed a disciplinary offence during the previous 24 months.
Jaiswal later defended his reaction on social media, saying the full context of the exchange should be considered before judging the incident.
The clash came as India made a strong start in Colombo, with Devdutt Padikkal scoring 117 and India reaching 475/8 before rain interrupted play on the second day.
