New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has underlined the importance of safe maritime routes and the protection of seafarers, saying both are vital to sustaining the global economy and uninterrupted trade.
Addressing the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi on Friday, Modi called for stronger cooperation among member countries to build reliable and resilient supply chains. He reiterated India’s support for freedom of navigation and the safety of seafarers amid increasing challenges to maritime trade.
The Prime Minister highlighted the expanding economic influence of BRICS, noting that the grouping now represents about 50% of the world’s population, 40% of global GDP and more than 25% of global trade.
He said the combined GDP of BRICS nations had increased nearly 4.5 times, compared with around 2.5 times for the global economy, demonstrating the bloc’s rapid economic expansion.
Modi also highlighted BRICS’ growing innovation ecosystem and urged businesses to strengthen investment, talent exchange and partnerships. He said the grouping’s economic potential should be converted into practical solutions for global challenges.
