Cardiologist Dr Ashok Seth has stressed the importance of identifying heart disease risks early, warning that cardiovascular problems are increasingly affecting younger Indians.

Speaking at the HealthWealth Summit 2026, Dr Seth and Dr Anoop Misra discussed the growing health risks associated with obesity, unhealthy lifestyles and excess body fat.

Dr Seth highlighted the need to pay attention to cholesterol levels in children, particularly around the age of 10. Early screening can help identify certain risk factors, including inherited high cholesterol. However, testing recommendations should depend on a child’s medical history, family background and individual risk.

The doctors also raised concerns about undiagnosed heart conditions among young people. Some cardiac disorders may remain unnoticed until serious complications occur. Symptoms such as fainting during exercise, unexplained chest pain and a family history of sudden cardiac death warrant medical evaluation.

Dr Misra explained that excess abdominal fat can increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other metabolic disorders. He emphasised that body weight alone does not always reflect a person’s health, making waist measurements and other clinical assessments important.

The doctors encouraged people to adopt balanced diets, exercise regularly, maintain healthy muscle mass and address risk factors such as smoking, stress and physical inactivity.

They emphasised that early detection and sustainable lifestyle changes can help reduce long-term cardiovascular risks.
