Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) annual sports festival began on Monday with competitions in chess, carrom, cricket and badminton. The event is being organised as part of the Self-Government Day 2026 celebrations.

BMC Mayor Sulochana Das inaugurated the indoor games at the civic body’s headquarters. Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar, BMC Commissioner and Recreation Club president Chanchal Rana, corporators, senior officials, employees and Recreation Club members were present.

Das highlighted the importance of sports and recreation in maintaining a healthy work environment. She said such activities help employees reduce stress, take a break from routine and develop renewed interest in their work.

She also said the annual festival provides an opportunity for employees and elected representatives to showcase their sporting talents. According to her, the event also helps strengthen coordination between elected representatives and officials.

Rana said the festival is being organised to promote sports and recreation among BMC representatives and employees. Competitions will be held in different phases, with both men and women taking part.

The celebrations will conclude with a cultural programme on August 31, according to the BMC Recreation Club.
