Ajay Rai’s absence from the Opposition’s protest march in Delhi has sparked speculation about his political future following his removal as Uttar Pradesh Congress president.
The development comes amid tensions within the state unit after a reported confrontation involving Rai’s supporters and Dalit Mahila Congress leader Mamta Chaudhary at the party headquarters.
Rai is reportedly unhappy with the manner of his removal and believes senior leaders influenced the decision. The dispute has further widened divisions within the Uttar Pradesh Congress.
One possibility under discussion is that the Congress leadership could offer Rai a new organisational responsibility to address his grievances. Gujarat has emerged as a possible option, although no official decision has been announced.
Rai’s strained relations with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav have also added to speculation about the reasons behind the leadership change.
Another possibility being discussed is a return to the BJP, where Rai was associated from 1996 to 2009 and won three Assembly elections.
Rai’s political ambitions, including his interest in the Pindra Assembly seat in Varanasi, could influence his next move.
For now, his political future remains uncertain as the Congress leadership faces the challenge of resolving internal differences.
