New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified that students studying in Class 10 during the 2026-27 academic session will continue with the existing two-language system. They will not be required to follow the newly introduced three-language framework.
The Board also announced that students currently in Classes 7, 8, and 9 will not have to take a Class 10 board exam in a third language. The clarification comes after schools and parents raised concerns about the revised language policy.
CBSE has also provided a one-time relaxation for students who have already chosen two foreign languages. They can continue with those subjects and add an Indian language as their third language.
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, students will eventually study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. However, the Board said the revised system will be introduced in phases to ensure a smooth transition.
CBSE said the aim of the new policy is to make language learning more meaningful while reducing confusion among students and schools.
