The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day weather alert for Odisha, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall until June 24.
Several districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Gajapati, are under an Orange Warning. Thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds of up to 60 kmph are likely in these areas.
Many other districts, including Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Sambalpur, Angul, and Ganjam, remain under a Yellow Warning. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph, along with scattered rainfall and thunderstorms.
The IMD said heavy rain is likely in parts of Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, and Koraput during the next few days. Rainfall activity is expected to become more widespread across the state from Day 3 onward.
People have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and secure loose outdoor objects. The weather department also warned of possible damage to crops, banana plantations, power lines, and communication infrastructure due to strong winds and lightning.
