King Charles has reportedly reaffirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will continue to be treated as private citizens and will not return as working members of the British royal family.
A letter issued on the King’s behalf stated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain bound by the arrangements made when they stepped down from royal duties in 2020. The couple will not represent the monarch at official engagements or resume royal responsibilities.
The communication also reiterated that Harry and Meghan should not use their HRH styles, which remain in abeyance. Their charitable and commercial activities will continue to be treated as private matters.
The move reinforces the long-standing principle that the couple cannot maintain a “half-in, half-out” role by pursuing independent careers while carrying out official duties for the monarchy.
The clarification comes following their reported return to Britain after several years in the United States. However, their presence in the UK does not signal a return to official royal duties.
Security arrangements for Harry and his family remain a separate matter and will continue to be handled by the relevant British authorities.
