India has strongly condemned the reported destruction of a century-old Hindu temple in Siraj village of Pakistan’s Narowal district, calling it an alarming failure to protect minority religious heritage.
The temple, located around 130 kilometres from Lahore, was reportedly demolished on August 21. Minority representatives and residents alleged that the structure was deliberately brought down and that the land was intended for use linked to a nearby madrassa.
However, Pakistani authorities maintained that the 100-year-old structure collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
Responding to the reports, the Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern and demanded a prompt and transparent investigation. India also urged Pakistan to hold those responsible accountable and take immediate steps to restore the temple.
The controversy has highlighted concerns over the protection of religious sites and minority communities in Pakistan. Community representatives have alleged that authorities were previously warned about possible threats to the temple.
Officials have said they will decide whether the historic structure should be rebuilt following an assessment of the site.
