A dramatic scene unfolded at the famous Maa Tarini Temple in Ghatagaon, Keonjhar district, after a young man climbed the temple spire and threatened to jump, causing panic among devotees and temple authorities.
The youth, identified as Sonu Mohanta from Kaliaduma village under Harichandanpur police station, reportedly took the extreme step after being unable to contact a young woman with whom he was allegedly in a relationship.
According to local sources, the two had left their homes together a few days earlier. The woman was later taken back by her family, following which the youth repeatedly tried to speak with her. When his efforts failed, he climbed the temple spire and allegedly threatened to end his life unless she spoke to him or returned.
The incident attracted a large crowd at the temple. Police, temple officials and local residents immediately reached the spot and spent considerable time counselling the youth.
After continuous persuasion, Sonu agreed to come down safely. During the rescue effort, no injuries were reported.
Police have started counselling the youth and are examining the circumstances that led to the incident. The brief drama disrupted normal temple activities before the situation was brought under control.
