Gitanjali Angmo has emerged as the leading voice supporting climate activist Sonam Wangchuk during his ongoing hunger strike. She has said she will lead the planned march to Parliament if Wangchuk is unable to participate.
Angmo is a social entrepreneur and educationist. In 2017, she and Wangchuk co-founded the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). The institute focuses on sustainable education, green technology, and practical solutions for life in Ladakh.
Born in Balasore, Odisha, Angmo studied physics at Fakir Mohan University before earning an MBA from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. She spent around 15 years working in the corporate sector, mainly in Denmark, before returning to India.
She has also founded businesses, launched a publishing house, and is a Chevening Scholar from the University of Oxford. Angmo has received the Women Transforming India Award for her contributions.
During Wangchuk’s previous detention, she approached the Supreme Court and publicly campaigned for his release. She is now actively sharing updates about his health and questioning the handling of his medical care.
Her recent role has brought the usually low-profile educationist into the national spotlight.
