Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the reported death of a devotee during the Rath Yatra in Puri. The incident reportedly occurred amid a heavy crowd on the Badadanda (Grand Road).
In a post on X, Patnaik said he was saddened by the loss of life and offered prayers for the departed soul. He also wished a speedy recovery to the devotees injured in the incident.
The former Odisha Chief Minister appealed to the state government to remain alert and strengthen crowd management to prevent such incidents in the future. He stressed that ensuring the safety and convenience of devotees should be the top priority during major religious gatherings.
Patnaik also assured that BJD workers would extend full support and assistance to those affected by the incident. He said the party would stand with devotees and their families during this difficult time.
The Rath Yatra in Puri attracts lakhs of devotees from across India and abroad every year. The large turnout highlights the need for effective crowd control, proper safety measures and timely emergency response to ensure that the annual festival is conducted peacefully and safely.
