Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that Delhi’s buses could one day run on hydrogen produced from municipal garbage. He shared the idea while speaking at a youth conclave organised by the Delhi BJP.
According to Gadkari, city waste can be separated and processed in biodigesters to produce hydrogen. This clean fuel could then be used to power public buses. He said the technology is possible and can help reduce pollution while improving waste management.
The minister also highlighted the use of waste in infrastructure projects. He said around 8 million tonnes of garbage from Delhi’s landfill sites have already been used in the construction of expressways. He added that the government’s goal is to remove garbage dumps across the country by 2027.
Gadkari also spoke about the financial value of waste management. He said the municipal corporation in his parliamentary constituency earns about ₹325 crore every year by selling treated wastewater.
Regarding ethanol-blended fuel, Gadkari defended the usage of E20 gasoline across the country. He rejected claims that it damages vehicle engines or reduces performance. The minister challenged detractors to find a single instance of E20 fuel causing damage to a car. He also said higher ethanol blending helps reduce crude oil imports and supports cleaner energy in India.
