Bhubaneswar: At least 77 pilgrims from a Kailash pilgrimage group led by spiritual leader Sadhguru were reportedly at an immigration centre in Gyirong, Tibet, when a powerful flash flood struck the border town on Wednesday.
The pilgrims were returning from the Kailash pilgrimage and had stopped at the immigration facility when floodwaters inundated the building and surrounding areas. Sadhguru said there was no official confirmation yet about their safety or whereabouts.
He said 21 groups were part of the pilgrimage, with 495 people already returning safely. Another 743 remained in Tibet, while 148 were in Nepal. Three volunteers were reportedly in Timure, Nepal.
The disaster also severely affected Nepal’s Rasuwa district, where floods and landslides reportedly damaged villages and infrastructure. Rescue teams, police, and military personnel were deployed.
China’s state media reported disruptions to roads, power and communication links near Gyirong Port. Authorities continued search-and-rescue operations as concerns grew over possible casualties.
