US Ambassador Sergio Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” during his first standalone visit to Srinagar. His remarks came after a meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.

Gor also said the United States may review its current travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir. The region is presently under a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning from the US because of security concerns.

During his meeting with Abdullah, Gor discussed tourism, economic cooperation and opportunities for stronger engagement between the US and Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah said the talks also covered horticulture and the emerging economy.

The US envoy praised the progress made in improving security and suggested that more American visitors could benefit from experiencing the region’s natural beauty and economic opportunities.

Gor is also scheduled to visit Ladakh. His visit is significant as it comes several years after the abrogation of Article 370 and amid continued discussions over security and development in the region.

Abdullah said he would focus on listening to Gor rather than raising complaints, stressing that Jammu and Kashmir’s issues need to be addressed through engagement with the Centre.
