BJP leader Smriti Irani on Thursday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his protests against the Election Commission of India (ECI), accusing him of seeking regime change instead of pursuing electoral transparency through democratic means.

In an interview with India Today TV, the former Union minister described Gandhi as an “unelectable prince” and called his protest a “political tantrum”. She argued that governments could be changed only through elections.

Irani also questioned Gandhi’s allegations of vote theft, claiming he had failed to provide sufficient evidence against the poll body. She accused the Congress leader and his allies of using the issue to attract media attention.

Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Irani said the exercise was necessary to correct discrepancies and update voter records. She also highlighted the participation of booth-level agents in the verification process.

The BJP leader further criticised Opposition demonstrations, questioning whether targeting constitutional institutions and making remarks against national leaders could be justified as democratic protest.

Irani alleged that the Opposition’s campaign was aimed at creating political disorder and weakening public confidence in electoral institutions.

Her remarks came amid protests led by Gandhi and other Opposition leaders over alleged irregularities in voter lists and demands for greater accountability from the Election Commission.
