Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Captain Smit Machchhar for showing exceptional courage during a serious cockpit incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073.

In a post on X, Modi called Machchhar a “hero” and said his determination, despite suffering serious injuries, helped protect the lives of 174 people on board. He also wished the pilot a speedy recovery.

Machchhar was reportedly attacked with a knife by his co-pilot while the aircraft was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. During the struggle, the plane reportedly lost significant altitude in a matter of seconds. Despite being injured, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door and call for assistance.

Passengers and crew members then intervened, while two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling on the aircraft helped regain control. The flight was diverted and safely landed in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have also publicly praised Machchhar for his actions.

The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said the pilot was stable and receiving medical care. Reports said Machchhar, who previously worked with SpiceJet, underwent surgery following the incident.

Flydubai has said the circumstances behind the confrontation remain unclear and cautioned against premature conclusions while investigations continue.
