The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, with January 1, 2027, set as the qualifying date.

The exercise will cover Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa, where Assembly elections are due in 2027. The revision aims to enrol eligible voters, correct errors and update electoral records ahead of the polls.

The five state Assemblies’ terms expire on different dates in March and May 2027. Uttar Pradesh has a 403-member Assembly, while Manipur has 60 seats, Goa 40, Punjab 117 and Uttarakhand 70.

The SSR process includes verification of voter details, identification of eligible citizens who have not registered, and removal of entries belonging to deceased or shifted voters, as well as duplicate registrations.

Booth Level Officers may conduct field verification to identify discrepancies and ensure electoral records remain accurate.

After the draft electoral rolls are published, eligible citizens can submit claims for inclusion and objections regarding incorrect entries. Applications for corrections and deletions will be processed under the prescribed rules before the final rolls are released.

The exercise is also expected to focus on first-time voters and young citizens to ensure that eligible electors are not excluded.

The Election Commission is expected to announce the detailed schedule, including the dates for draft publication and submission of claims and objections.
