Actor Imran Khan has approached the Bombay High Court seeking an urgent stay and cancellation of a notice directing him to leave India by October 28. The notice was issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) following his participation in an October 10 protest in Mumbai demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Khan’s petition seeks the records behind the FRRO’s decision, arguing that the authorities have not specified the alleged violation of immigration rules. Additionally, it asserts that his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card status and related residency rights were disregarded.
According to the plea, Khan was given 14 days to leave the country without a prior inquiry or an opportunity to explain his position. It argues that his participation in the protest did not violate any restrictions and that the order is disproportionate.
According to the petition, Khan was detained with his partner, Lekha Washington, and cousin, Zayn Marie Khan, after being encircled by reporters while he was leaving the protest location.
BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had earlier demanded Khan’s deportation, alleging that his participation in the demonstration violated immigration rules. Khan maintained that he attended the protest as a Mumbai resident and not as a representative of any political organisation.
