US Vice President JD Vance has sparked discussion after saying Pakistan and Qatar do not have the same level of press freedom as the United States.
Speaking on the podcast “Interesting Times with Ross Douthat,” Vance explained why the US delayed releasing the full text of its memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Iran. He said there was a difference in expectations regarding public access to government agreements.
According to Vance, countries like Pakistan do not have constitutional protections similar to the US First Amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and freedom of the press. He said Americans expect official documents to be available for public scrutiny and debate.
His remarks have renewed attention on Pakistan’s press freedom record. The country ranks low in global press freedom assessments and has often faced criticism over restrictions on journalists and media organisations.
Vance also defended the US-Iran agreement, saying it requires Iran to eliminate its stockpile of enriched uranium. He added that the proposed economic benefits for Iran would come through international investment and not from American taxpayer money.
The comments have generated political debate and added to the discussion surrounding the recently announced US-Iran deal.
