Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s rich art and cultural heritage received international recognition at the International Institute of Democracy and Election Management Conference (IICDEM-2026), held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from January 21 to 23.

Organised by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the global conference saw participation from delegations representing more than 70 countries. As part of a special international cultural exchange initiative, Odisha’s world-famous Pattachitra paintings were displayed and presented as cultural mementoes to chief representatives from over 40 nations.

The intricate artworks portrayed Lord Shri Krishna’s divine Raslila and the various majestic beshas (attires) of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, symbolising India’s spiritual richness and artistic excellence. Created using natural colours on cloth, the paintings highlighted Odisha’s centuries-old scroll painting tradition.

Officials said the decision to feature Pattachitra at the international forum was inspired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s visit to Odisha in December 2025. During his visit to the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri and the Sun Temple at Konark, he also toured Raghurajpur village in Puri district, where he was deeply impressed by the craftsmanship and dedication of traditional artisans. The visit reportedly led to the inclusion of Pattachitra in the world-level event.

Dating back to the 10th century, Pattachitra continues to thrive as a living art tradition in Odisha and has steadily gained admiration on global platforms. Showcasing the art form at IICDEM-2026 has further elevated the state’s cultural pride, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, said in a statement.

Representing Odisha at the conference were State Chief Electoral Officer R.S. Gopalan, Additional CEO Susant Kumar Mishra, Deputy CEOs Laxmiprasad Sahu and Anamika Singh, and Finance Advisor Sanjay Kumar Lugun.
