India’s naval aviation capabilities took a significant step forward as a Rafale Marine fighter jet landed on the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant for the first time on October 29. The aircraft successfully completed the landing on its first attempt.

The development marks an important milestone in integrating the French-origin fighter into Indian Navy operations. The ongoing trials in Goa are aimed at testing the aircraft’s compatibility with INS Vikrant and assessing the modifications required for carrier-based operations. India signed a ₹63,000 crore agreement with France on April 28, 2025, to procure 26 Rafale Marine aircraft for the Navy. The deal includes 22 single-seat fighters and four twin-seat trainer aircraft, along with weapons, simulators, training, and logistical support.

Deliveries are expected to be completed by 2030. The agreement also includes technology transfer to support integrating indigenous weapons, along with facilities for fuselage production and maintenance in India.

Designed specifically for aircraft carrier operations, the Rafale Marine will strengthen the Navy’s air defence and strike capabilities. Its induction is expected to enhance India’s maritime security and operational strength across the Indian Ocean region.
